Military Bowl: History
The Military Bowl has been played annually since 2008. Back in its first year being played, it was the first bowl game to be played following the 2008 season.
In the first two years of the bowl game’s existence, the game was called the EagleBank Bowl. Since then — over the last seven years — it has been deemed the Military Bowl.
The ACC has always had a contracted tie-in to the game, but its opponents have varied from Navy to Army and three other conferences. The ACC however has not always participated in the game despite its contractual agreement, usually occurring because of the conference not having enough bowl eligible teams.
From 2014-2019, the game have been and are scheduled to be between the ACC and The American. The ACC has won four of its six appearances in the bowl game’s history.
From 2008-2012, the game was played at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington, D.C. Since 2012, the game has been played at Navy-Marine Crops Memorial Stadium.
Last year’s contest, which featured Wake Forest and Temple, ended in a 34-26 victory for the Demon Deacons. It was Wake Forest’s second time appearing in the bowl game’s history and is the only program to go 2-0 in its two games.
No other program has appeared more than twice in the bowl game’s history. Maryland, Navy and Temple are the other schools who have played twice. Maryland and Navy have gone 1-1, while Temple has yet to win in the bowl game.
The Pac-12 and WAC have each participated in the game just one time, but have been victorious in their respective appearances. Only those two conferences and the ACC have winning records in the bowl game’s history.
Notable MVPs of previous games within the bowl’s history include Akeem Ayers, David Fales, Rakeem Cato and Keenan Reynolds.
The payout for each team is $1 million.
