But one deals strictly with a formula, and it still really likes Michigan. The final S&P rankings (a system which rates teams on an algorithm) were released by Football Outsiders on Tuesday afternoon. The Wolverines ranked third, behind only Alabama, still ranked No. 1 after losing Monday night, and Clemson.
The analytic rankings have been kind to Michigan all season, thanks mostly to the team’s defense, which was rated second.
Michigan was the highest-ranked Big Ten team, edging No. 5 Ohio State, No. 8 Penn State and No. 11 Wisconsin.
