Another week, another new No. 1 in college basketball’s AP Top 25 Poll.
Villanova ascended to the top spot as the prior No. 1, Baylor, fell all the way to No. 6 in Monday’s new rankings. The Bears lost for the first time this past week at West Virginia. Villanova, the defending national champion, fell out of the top spot after losing at Butler on Jan. 4.
After Villanova, Nos. 2-5 Kansas, UCLA, Gonzaga and Kentucky rounded out the new top 5.
As for the Big Ten, three teams found spots in the Top 25, including newly ranked Maryland.
Big Ten teams in the AP Poll:
- No. 17, 14-3 Wisconsin (up one spot)
- No. 21, 14-4 Purdue (down four spots)
- No. 25, 16-2 Maryland (previously unranked)
It’s the second week in a row a Big Ten team moved into the Top 25. Last week, Minnesota entered the rankings at No. 24. Though the Golden Gophers dropped out, Maryland keeps the number of ranked Big Ten teams at three.
