Camping World Bowl 2017: Oklahoma State-Virginia Tech preview
While the bowl game has always been played in Florida since its first game in 1990, it has not always taken place in Orlando. From 1990-2000, the game was played at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami Gardens. The game was first played in Orlando in 2001, and has been played at Camping World Stadium ever since.
The initial working title of the bowl game was the Sunshine Classic in 1990, but it was changed to the Blockbuster Bowl by the time the inaugural game was played. From there on out, the game would go through several names changes over the years, including the Carquest Bowl, the Mazda Bowl, the Champs Sports Bowl and the Russell Athletic Bowl. 2017 marks the first year that the game is referred to as the Camping World Bowl.
The bowl features a matchup of a team from the ACC and a team from the Big 12. In previous years, however, teams from the Big Ten Conference and the Big East Conference have played in this bowl game.
In the 2016 Russell Athletic Bowl at Camping World Stadium, Miami defeated West Virginia 31-14 on Dec. 28. Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya took home the game’s MVP Award after throwing for 282 yards and four touchdowns.
This season, Oklahoma State and Virginia Tech will meet for only the third time ever, and the first time since 1972. The Cowboys won in their first meeting in 1971, and the Hokies got the win in their next meeting in 1972.
Virginia Tech will be making its second appearance in this bowl game, while Oklahoma State will be playing in the game for the first time. The Hokies won the 2012 Russell Athletic Bowl by defeating Rutgers, 13-10, in overtime.
For the 24th year in a row, Virginia Tech will be playing in a bowl game. Last season, the Hokies defeated Arkansas, 35-24, in the Belk Bowl. They have not lost a bowl game since 2013.
Oklahoma State will be playing in a bowl game for the 12th straight year. The Cowboys defeated Colorado, 38-8, in the 2016 Alamo Bowl last season.
The matchup of the game will be Oklahoma State’s high-powered offense against Virginia Tech’s defense, which ranks No. 12 in the nation in total defense.
