It doesn’t look great for the Big Ten in ESPN’s latest Bracketology. College basketball analyst Joe Lunardi has just four Big Ten teams in the NCAA Tournament field in his latest March Madness projection, which was released Thursday.
Here are the Big Ten teams in the field:
- Michigan State – No. 1 seed
- Purdue – No. 3 seed
- Michigan – No. 9 seed
- Maryland – No. 11 seed (playing in First Four)
That’s it. Just four Big Ten teams in the field, and one of them is right on the bubble as the last team selected.
All hope is not lost for the conference, though. Minnesota (13-3, 2-1 Big Ten) and Ohio State (12-4, 3-0) were both right on the fringe of the field. The Gophers were the first team listed out of the field and the Buckeyes were third among the “first four out.”
The Big Ten could have some separation in the next two months and end up with six or seven teams in the field. But it’s tough to get quality wins when you’re playing middle-of-the-road conference opponents on a nightly basis.
