Akron-Florida Atlantic preview, keys to the game
Florida Atlantic had a difficult beginning to the 2017 season. The Owls started its campaign with a 42-19 defeat to Navy. One week later, the team traveled to face No. 9-ranked Wisconsin at the time and lost, 31-14.
Despite the 0-2 start, the Owls responded with a 45-0 victory the following week over Bethune Cookman. One week later, however, the team fell to Buffalo and owned a 1-3 overall record. Over the next nine games is where the Owls turned its season around.
In those nine games, Florida Atlantic went 9-0, defeating every team by at least 14 points except for one — Marshall, 30-25. Lane Kiffin, who is in his first season as the coach of the Owls, is having his second-best winning percentage as the man in charge to this point in his collegiate career. In 2011, his USC Trojans went 10-2.
The Owls are led by Jason Driskel at QB, who has completed over 65 percent of his passes this season while throwing 13 TD to 4 INT. The ground game, however, is where the Owls win games.
Leading the team in rushing is sophomore RB Devin Singletary, who has registered 275 carries for 1,796 yards and 29 TD. One year ago, Singletary had an effective freshman campaign as well, averaging over 6.7 yards per carry — he averages 6.5 per carry this season — while gaining 1,021 yards and 12 TD.
Las Vegas likely is assuming that Singletary is going to run all over Akron’s defense, hence the Owls being 22.5-point favorites. No WR on the team has at least 600 receiving yards on the season — Willie Wright leads with 586.
For Akron, the Zips have had an up-and-down 2017 season. The team opened the year with an ugly 52-0 loss to Penn State, but rebounded one week later with a 52-3 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
The Zips then lost its next two games, but responded with three straight victories. The team was 4-3 after its first seven games and then finished with three wins and three losses to end the regular season at 7-6 overall.
The team has used two QBs fairly often throughout the season, as Thomas Woodson has thrown 278 passes this season, while Kato Nelson has 125 attempts. No Zips player has at least 400 yards rushing, as Manny Morgan has amassed 393 yards on 99 carries with a 4 yards per carry average.
Kwadarrius Smith has caught 34 passes for 726 yards and 7 TD with a 21.4 yards per catch average. Big plays from Smith would help the Zips keep up with the Owls’ offense.
