Maryland-Penn State preview
As previously mentioned, both teams are coming off respectable showings throughout the regular season.
Maryland enters the title game as the No. 3-ranked team in the nation, as the Terrapins currently hold an overall record of 17-1. Their 16-1 regular season (6-0 in Big Ten play) was tops in the Big Ten.
The Terrapins earned the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and defeated the No. 4-seeded Johns Hopkins, 16-11, on Friday evening. Maryland currently is riding a 15-game winning streak into the title game.
On the other side, Penn State enters the Big Ten final as the No. 16-ranked team in the country. The Nittany Lions enter the title game with an overall record of 10-8. Although Penn State has not lived up to their preseason expectations after its 17-4 record in 2017, the Nittany Lions are playing well at the right time.
Penn State’s 9-8 record (3-3 in Big Ten play) during the regular season was good enough to land the Nittany Lions the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. In their first game of the tournament, the Nittany Lions topped Northwestern, 21-16, on Friday night.
In last year’s tournament, Maryland defeated Johns Hopkins in the semifinals, 19-16, and went on to win the title game convincingly over Northwestern, 14-6. Penn State, on the other hand, fell to Northwestern in the semifinals, 12-11.
Penn State and Maryland will meet for the second time this season. In their previous matchup during the regular season, Maryland came out on top at home by a final score of 13-8.
Maryland is led by senior Megan Whittle. During the regular season, Whittle scored 65 goals, which was ninth in the nation. She is the biggest threat on a Maryland offense that ranked eighth in goals per game (16.11).
Penn State is led by senior Katie O’Donnell and junior Madison Carter. O’Donnell averaged 3.06 goals per game during the regular season, while Carter averaged 2.94.
