Big Ten spring game schedule 2018: Previews, questions
Ohio State:
What’s going on with the starting quarterback situation? With starter J.T. Barrett gone, the Buckeyes will have a new starting quarterback. Dwayne Haskins filled in for an injured Barrett against Michigan and led Ohio State to a win at rival Michigan. But Urban Meyer said there hasn’t been separation at quarterback. Haskins and Joe Burrow are the clear favorites, but Meyer also mentioned Tate Martell.
Penn State:
How will QB Sean Clifford look like with more reps, now that usual backup Tommy Stevens is out with an undisclosed injury.
From Landof10’s Audrey Snyder:
Franklin said the situation is a bit of a “blessing in disguise” as Stevens is forced to take mental reps and the young quarterback works as Trace McSorley’s backup. It’s a move that in all likelihood won’t pay dividends this fall, but next spring when Stevens is slated to be the quarterback and Clifford likely elevated to the top backup spot, this spring will certainly help.
Michigan:
Is there a changed Jim Harbaugh? Wolverines players are saying they’re seeing a gentler side of Harbaugh after a disappointing 8-5 season. Harbaugh said he’s gone through some assessment of the program and of himself to turn what was mediocre in the program into something great.
“Maybe that’s what’s rejuvenated me. I feel great about all aspects of the program right now,” Harbaugh said. “Probably the best analogy I can think of is you plow the fields and expose what’s good and what’s not good and then you go about fixing it.”
Nebraska
New coach Scott Frost is going to dominate offseason headlines, both in the Big Ten and also around the country. Frost led UCF to an undefeated season and now returns to the Huskers. The former quarterback led Nebraska to a split national championship in 1997.
Part of the change at Nebraska with Frost is a new defensive approach in the 4-3 with DC Erik Chinander.
“I think it’s more see ball, get ball mentality, and not just running downhill,” senior linebacker Dedrick Young said. “You know, with the two-gap and the guard all of the time, so it’s shuffling and reading the ball to get to it.”
