This Alamo Bowl figures to be one of the best mid-tier bowls this year, as Stanford and TCU are the highest ranked pair of teams in any non-New Year’s Six bowl. Both looked strong in the regular season, but neither could beat the top teams in their respective conferences despite multiple tries.
Stanford fell to 42-24 to USC in its second game of the season, then lost again in the Pac-12 Championship Game in a 31-28 nailbiter. TCU had similar problems with Oklahoma, losing 38-20 in the regular season then getting rolled 41-17 in the Big 12 Championship.
In a conference of shootouts and explosive passing offenses, TCU managed to put together a top defense. The Horned Frogs led the Big 12 in scoring, run, pass and total defense, leaving little doubt who had the best defense in the conference.
The unit did have trouble again Oklahoma quarterback and Heisman winner Baker Mayfield, and now they will get the Heisman runner-up to Mayfield in Stanford running back Bryce Love. The junior led all power conference players in rushing yards with 1,973 and averaged 8.32 yards per carry.
On the offensive side of the ball for the Horned Frogs, quarterback Kenny Hill has put together a strong year with 2,838 passing yards, 7.9 yards per attempt, 21 touchdowns and six interceptions. He’ll face a Stanford defense that posted yet another good year, finishing second in the Pac-12 in scoring defense at 21.5 points per game.
