The 2017 NBA Draft Lottery will take place on Tuesday, May 16. The 14 teams that do not make the NBA playoffs are entered into the lottery, and the Celtics, Suns, Lakers and 76ers have the best shots at landing the No. 1 pick.
In order, the Magic, Timberwolves, Knicks, Kings , Mavericks, Pelicans, Hornets, Pistons, Nuggets andHeat all follow them.
2017 NBA Draft Lottery odds:
The Nets, at 20-62, had the worst regular-season record in the NBA this season, but won’t get a shot at the lottery at all because the Celtics can swap first-round picks with them. Boston’s still alive in the NBA playoffs, while the other three teams with double-digit odds at the top pick — the Suns, Lakers and 76ers — were mired in losing seasons. The Celtics have the best odds at the top pick, but at 25 percent, it’s far from a guarantee that they get it. Additionally, the 76ers get the Lakers’ pick if it falls outside the top 3.
Here are each team’s odds at securing each of the top three picks:
|TEAM||Odds for No. 1 pick||Odds for top-2 pick||Odds for top-3 pick|
|Boston Celtics (via Brooklyn Nets)*||25.0||46.5||64.3|
|Los Angeles Lakers**||15.6||31.3||46.9|
|New York Knicks||5.3||11.3||18.3|
|New Orleans Pelicans****||1.1||2.4||4.0|
*The Celtics can (and will) swap picks with the Nets.
**If the Lakers’ pick falls outside the top 3, the 76ers get the pick.
***The 76ers can swap picks with the Kings if the Kings get a higher pick. But if the Kings’ pick falls outside the top 10, the pick goes to the Bulls.
****The Pelicans’ first-round pick would go to the Kings if the pick stays outside the top 3.
How the NBA Draft lottery works
Each team is assigned a number of four-number combinations. Fourteen ping-pong balls are placed in the lottery machine, each numbered between 1 and 14. They are mixed in the machine for 20 seconds, then the first ball is removed. Then the balls are mixed for 10 seconds and a second ball is removed. That process is repeated for two more balls, and the team with the corresponding four-digit combination gets the No. 1 pick. That process is repeated for the next two picks. The order of the next 11 picks is determined by record. The official 2017 NBA Draft order will be announced in reverse, with the No. 14 team being revealed first and the top pick last.
